What is Sewing?

Sewing is essentially the practice of mending clothes and other items with a needle and thread. It is the craft of attaching or fastening objects using stitches made with a needle and thread. It is one of the oldest of the textile arts.

A Brief History of Sewing

Sewing dates back to 17,500 BC when the first sewing needles with eyes were invented. Archaeologists and anthropologists have discovered sewing needles with eyes during this time, that were likely made of bone and used to sew furs and skins. Although some ancient sewing needles date back almost 25,000 years ago, during the last ice age, Chinese archaeologists discovered something fascinating that dates back to 202 BC.

Sewing needles, along with the oldest thimbles in recorded history, were found in the tomb of a government official from the Han Dynasty. Even in ancient history, sewing was an important part of life and more advanced than we may think. From this point buttons, cotton spinning machinery and needle factories were created which led to sewing becoming increasingly popular. Today, sewing is both a popular hobby and a career whereby people go on to become dressmakers, cobblers, fashion designers and much more.
