About Taekwondo 

Taekwondo is one of the most scientific and systematic Korean traditional martial arts, that teaches much more than physical fighting skills. It is a discipline that shows many ways of enhancing your spirit and life through training your body and mind. Today, it has become a global spot that has gained international recognition and stands among the official games in the Olympics. Taking a closer look at the meaning of the word, it is composed of three parts as shown in the English spelling, however, it is one word in Korean. ‘Tae’ means foot, leg or to step on. ‘Kwon’ means fist or fight and ‘Do’ means way or discipline.  

If you put all of these words together, you can see two important concepts behind the words ‘Tae Kwon Do’. The first being that Taekwondo is the right way of using Tae and Kwon ‘fists and feet’ or all the parts of the body that are represented by fists and feet. Second, it is a way to control or calm down fights and keep the peace. This concept derives from the meaning of Tae Kwon ‘to put fists under control’ or ‘to step on fists’. Therefore, Taekwondo means ‘the right way of using all parts of the body to stop fights and help to build a better and more peaceful world’.

Taekwondo will develop your athletic abilities and self-awareness and will improve your abilities to defend yourself. It will also emphasise moral development and you will have better concentration, self-discipline, self-restraint and self-confidence. It will improve your health since it is an exercise that will tone and strengthen the body and also help with maintaining and losing weight. Your physical coordination, flexibility, balance and mental acumen will also be increased by doing Taekwondo classes.  

What Will I Learn? 

Each Taekwondo class varies depending on the age group and the level. However, there are some things you will learn in any taekwondo class. Therefore, you can expect to learn how to practice basic patterns and forms, board breaking, kicking, blocking, striking and punching. Some classes may cover more than you read here.
