About Environmental Studies

As residents on Earth, our actions can impact the planet and the remainder of its inhabitant. Just as major environmental catastrophes such as earthquakes, hurricanes and volcanic eruptions can affect us, our actions have major impacts on the environment. Human activities, such as cutting down forests, damning rivers and pollution released into the environment all have created significant impacts for environmental health and society. Environmental studies refer to a field of study that examines this relationship between the environment and people.

It is an interdisciplinary subject examining the interplay between the legal, social, management and scientific aspects of environmental issues. Interdisciplinary means that issues are examined from many perspectives. Unlike environmental science, which focuses primarily on the scientific component of these environmental issues, environmental studies investigate the humanitarian and scientific aspects. Students of environmental studies learn the effects, causes and possible solutions to address the important environmental problems.

What Will I Learn?

You will learn about the earth’s natural resources, the relationship between population and the environment and sustainable development and the various agendas. The course will educate students on the greenhouse effect and provide them with an understanding of the difference between conservation and preservation. The environment in relation to EU law and regulation, ethics and how to devise an environmental impact assessment will also be explored. Students will learn how to address the causes of environmental pollution and put forward solutions to contemporary environmental problems and analyse current regulation and legislation to address environmental issues. You will learn how to independently respond to issues arising from the environment and gain an understanding of key practices of environmental management and the processes involved in their implementation.
